Does the new health care bill include provisions to force healthcare facilities to publish procedure prices?

Sunday Mar 7, 2010

One of the big reasons why the free market fails the health care system is because typically the market relies on the consumers ability to compare competing products. It is exceedingly rare for health care consumers to shop around between facilities, and prices can vary greatly between facilities, even for the same procedure.

This is further hidden because insurance typically covers most to all of the cost, which is actually to the detriment of everyone, since the more an insurer spends on covering its customers, the more they have to charge for premiums, deductibles and co-pays, and the less they are able to cover overall.

Does anyone know if the new bill does anything to make the process more transparent? I personally think if there were a website like kayak/priceline/orbitz for healthcare, then the free market would actually work more like it’s supposed to. There are obviously other problems in the industry, but this is a huge one. Once a customer is paying for insurance, they lose virtually all interest in minimizing the actual medical costs.
Most reports I’ve seen had the bill at 1990 pages, not 19000. It’s still long enough to make it inaccessible to most normal people, but that shouldn’t stop Politicians. How many 15-year-olds burned through Harry Potter books that totalled up to 900 pages in a night or two? The bill SHOULD be long, because it deals with an absurdly complex issue.

Good question.
The bill is some 19,000 pages long.
Do you think anyone has actually read it from one end to the other? Have they had the time?
Although this is a non-answer, I think it typifies what is wrong with this bill.
Some people are going to say "yes", others "no".
BTW: I like the website idea…..

They already have the UCR (usual and customary rates) that you can Google.

Such a system still won’t work because of the asymmetry of information between the provider and the consumer of health-care. The consumer will never know enough to make it a competitive market unless they are all doctor’s themselves.
