Today I converted to vegetarianism! What foods should I sample or avoid?
Posted by admin | Under Free Health Food Samples Sunday Mar 7, 2010A few months ago, I tried tofu.
Last week, I tried hummus with breadsticks.
For breakfast this morning, I devoured tomato couscous with black olive chunks.
And I think I’d like to become a vegetarian.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve condemned animal cruelty and believe that the slaughter of animals was heart-wrenchingly upsetting and unethical. I would shudder listening to "Meat is Murder" by The Smiths. I used to cry my eyes out watching YouTube videos of distressed farm animals being flogged, tasered and tortured until they spasmed violently and slowly died on the floor. I like reading about people adopting animals, Darwin’s theory of evolution and I admire PETA’s campaigns for the prevention of animal cruelty. So my questions are:
What health risks could I run into for avoiding meat consumption? (Anemia?)
What are your favourite vegetarian foods?
What foods wouldn’t you recommend to a new vegetarian?
What are your personal reasons for refusing to eat meat?
How difficult is it to maintain a completely meat-free diet?
As a vegan/vegetarian, what foods besides meat do you avoid eating?
Thank you, guys! I’m fifteen years old it it helps.
I have spent a lot of time around vegetarians and vegans, specifically raw-food vegans, and I can tell you that only the most liberal vegetarian diet works. The idea that you do not need the resources contained in meats and other animal products is absurd. The strict vegetarian diet cannot sustain a healthy human being. Every single strict vegetarian and vegan I have met has had serious mental and physical problems. For instance, I spent two weeks living in a family of raw food vegans. The grandmother was a psycho who was unable to control her mental stability, her daughter had serious skin problems, and the grandchildren all had mental issues, including seizures. The family’s survival was always on the brink of absolute insanity. All real vegetarians I have met (not including the ones that eat fish and eggs, nice try, you’re not fooling me) have had pale complexion, poor mental health (mostly minor problems, not insanity), and poor physical health (either under or overweight, and unable to remedy either).
There’s nothing wrong with vegetarian food. There IS something wrong with a vegetarian diet, to eat nothing but vegetarian food. I do not condone unnecessary animal cruelty either, but neither do I consider food production to be unnecessary.
you need to watch your vitamin b12 consumption and protien.
Tofu is actualy a protien inhibiter, it’s yummy, but dont reley on it too much.
I myself make a cumbumber/spinach puree with some corriander and lemon juice of a morning for some iron and protien.
b12 tablets are a real help however.
you need to watch for food with "hidden" meat. ie: lollies, cheese, butter, cream ect.
Some cheese is vegetarian however, I love nimbin cheese myself, feta cheese is also vegetarian, if you like soft cheeses jindi had vege ones.
Butter wise I use nuttelex. or substitute with olive oil more often.
I’d also reccomend regularly taking flaxseed oil.
Another yummy thing is unlike most, alot of asian jellys have agar or coconut gel instead of geletin. so watch out for them at supermarkets!

Good for you, you are at the start of a whole new food adventure! A vegetarian life style is full of colour and flavour, and sometimes I think it is more varied than that of meat eaters. And eating meat is just plain unethical, once you know what really happens on factory farms and what it does to the planet.
NB: Be sure to take vitamin B supplements, as vegetarians tend to need these after a while.
Here are two websites with yummy recipes:

You won’t get anemic personally I just take a multi-vitamin every morning (Just to be safe)
My favorite vegetarian food is by far Hummus and Tahini
I don’t eat meat mostly for health reasons mostly but it’s also nice to help the animals
It’s pretty easy to maintain if you eat a lot of beans
I avoid eating all animal products aside from honey (I’m a beekeeper, so I have a bit of a different impression than many vegans on this)

Normal slaughter of animals can be humane compared to this

1. Your health will improve. Anemia is caused by low iron. Green vegetables are loaded with iron.
2. my favorite food is black bean tacos
3. I recommend all food as food is good.
4. Meat coats your colon in a lovely tar like layer leading to colon cancer. Also if you look at the larger picture genetically there is little difference between us and just about every other animal on the planet..
5. Its only difficult if you are shy about preparing your own meals and reading labels. They slip meat into many processed and prepared foods. Watch the labels!
6. I avoid anything with Canola oil in it. Its chemical structure is more similar to motor oil than cooking oil. In fact it makes a better industrial oil than cooking oil. Google dangers of Canola oil it’ll trip you out.
Now you say your 15 what do your parents think of this decision? If you don’t involve them your home life can become difficult until you get out and make your own way. Your dietary choices are in the end your own however having parental support can make things easier. You may find your parents following suit and coming along for the ride. Show them some research on the diet and positive health effects not just what people are saying here. Show them you are serious and they will likely support you. This is no light decision you are making. Good luck and long life.

If you don’t get enough protein, vitamin b12, or iron, you can get anemia or get very sick, so make sure you watch what you eat.
Yves veggie burgers! They are so yummy, I could eat them everyday!
I became vegetarian because of animal cruelty. I feel very strongly for animals.
It’s pretty easy actually, there are alot of vegetarian options at the supermarket!
Gelatin and Glycerin. (Gelatin is made from animal bones and cartilage, and some glycerin is made from animal fat)
Good luck on your switch!
